The workshop aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines to improve our theoretical and empirical understanding of political actor’s decision-making on agricultural and rural policies. After a boom in academic studies of the liberalisation reforms in the 1990s and 2000s, many recent policy developments stay aside from the scholarly attention making evidence-based policy-making challenging. This workshop aims to provide a research platform for exchanging new research insights on the political economy of agricultural policies. We will discuss how self-interested autocrats, political parties, interest groups, local governments and other stakeholders interact in forming agricultural policy outcomes and shaping policy discourses. The second day of the two-day event will focus on the political economy of land relations.
We invite contributions from different academic disciplines (including, but not limited to, political science, economics, and development studies), covering different regions and using different methodologies and techniques. We will discuss the following topics:
- Land policy reform and structural transformation
- Political economy of land governance and land relations
- Decentralisation of political decision-making and administrative reforms
- Intergovernmental relations and agricultural policies, policies in custom unions
- Corruption, rule of law, quality of bureaucracy
- Diversification of agricultural interests, interest group organisation and policy
- Role of NGOs from food, animal welfare and environmentalist perspective
Keynote speakers
Björn Alpermann (Würzburg, Germany)
Professor at the University of Würzburg, Germany, Chair of Contemporary Chinese Studies. His research interests include rural governance and development, urbanization and social change as well as population policy of China. He led several research projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Klaus Deininger (Washington DC, USA)
Lead Economist of the World Bank, Development Research Group / Task Team Leader, the World Bank and the EU Program “Supporting Transparent Land Governance in Ukraine”. His areas of research focus on income/asset inequality and its relationship to poverty reduction and growth, access to land, land markets, and land reform.
Christilla Roederer-Rynning (Odense, Denmark)
Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, Department of Political Science and Public Management. Her research focuses on EU policy-making, institutional theory, the impact of institutional reform in particular on interest mediation in the context of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, and the transnationalization of collective action.
Andrey Yakovlev (Moscow, Russian Federation)
Director of the Institute for Enterprise and Market Analysis, Higher School of Economics. His research interests include industrial policy, corporate governance, political economy of social changes in developing countries, state-business relations, and public procurement.
How to apply?
Please, submit a structured abstract (max. 500 words) by December 8, 2019 (extended deadline) to Dr. Vasyl Kvartiuk, kvartiuk(at)iamo.de, with a subject line “Political Economy Workshop”. To facilitate the review process, submitted abstracts need to explicitly follow the following structure:
Research Type: Conceptual, theoretical, empirical or a review (select one)
Research Question/Issue: One or two sentences presenting the focus of the paper
Method: Two or three sentences clarifying the methodological approach chosen, and data source; if the paper is conceptual/theoretical state the main framework your research builds on.
Key Findings/Insights: Two to three sentences explaining the findings or insights derived from your study. This section should highlight the contribution of your work to the broader literature.
Implications: In this section, please state the broader implications of your findings for researchers and/or policy-makers, as appropriate.
Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified in short time.
Expenses
There is no fee for attending the workshop. Participants are however expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. Unfortunately, we are not in position to offer travel grants.
Format of the meeting
Our goal is to facilitate a substantive and lively discussion during the workshop. Every paper presentation will be assigned a discussant who will read the paper and provide a short feedback after the presentation. It is thus important to submit full papers two weeks before the workshop.
