KlimALEZ provides open access to satellite-based weather data

As part of the project “Increasing climate resilience via agricultural insurance – Innovation transfer for sustainable rural development in Central Asia” (KlimALEZ), a platform for climate services has been created that enables easy access to satellite-based weather data.

The strongest impediment against the practical implementation of weather index insurance in developing countries is the lack of reliable long-term weather data. While the variety and quality of the satellite-based weather products has significantly increased over the last decades, most of these products are accessible only to qualified specialists in the field of remote sensing.

To bridge the gap between raw data and end users, the KlimALEZ team created an open access platform providing climate services. Visualized and regional weather products are made accessible on a user-friendly, automatic and real time web-platform named “Satellite Weather Data Extractor”. Easy access to satellite-based precipitation and temperature data might serve to foster climate smart decisions worldwide. An Android-based mobile application is currently under development.
