Results from the projects "Global food security and the grain markets of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan" (GERUKA) and "Analysis of the strategy of the Russian Federation to expand agricultural production" (STARLAP) were presented.
The focus was on the latest developments in the Russian agricultural sector in the light of a comprehensive protection programme against favourable world market imports and high subsidies. Russian pig production has benefited from this policy and has shown a very dynamic development in recent years: "We expect that Russian and German pork exporters will compete on the world market in future," says IAMO scientist Linde Götz. However, the results for the pork sector cannot be transferred to the production of milk and beef, which require much higher investments and are subject to a longer production cycle: "The high macroeconomic and political instability plays a major role here, which - as has been shown - cannot be offset even with extensive subsidies". By contrast, the grain sector, which is developing very well anyway, is benefiting additionally from the devaluation of the rouble. It is expected that the success story of this sector will continue with Russia's steady rise to become the world's largest wheat exporter, while the USA will continue to lose importance.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the ministries of Berlin and Bonn, agricultural associations and industry.
