IAMO Forum 2022 focuses on the impact of the pandemic on rural development

IAMO's annual conference will be held in Halle (Saale), Germany, June 22-24, 2022, on the topic "Enhancing resilience in a post-pandemic era: challenges and opportunities for rural development".

The Corona pandemic has affected rural areas worldwide in many ways. Impacts extend to agricultural trade, international mobility, rural livelihoods, and many other development-related aspects. Some effects on rural households are still unknown, and especially poorer countries may be faced with setbacks in their rural development efforts.

Over three days, IAMO Forum 2022 will focus on the effects of the pandemic on rural areas in a series of lectures and discussions. In this context, attention will also be paid to the question of which agricultural enterprises or regions proved to be more resilient to the shocks. Under what conditions do systems succeed in remaining resilient and adaptable to future crisis situations? How has agricultural trade responded to the shocks, and do food import-dependent countries with more diversified trade structures have better food and nutrition security?

In addition to these questions, a special session on June 23, 9 a.m., will address the impact of the war on Ukraine, and the panel discussion on June 24, 10 a.m., will also reflect on the current situation.

The IAMO Forum 2022 offers insights into current research and an intensive exchange between science and practice. Numerous recognized speakers from research, industry and international institutions will participate in the conference. The conference program is available online here: https://forum2022.iamo.de/program/.

We cordially invite representatives of the media to participate in the IAMO Forum and look forward to your coverage. We are happy to arrange interview appointments with the experts at the conference. If interested, for on-site accreditation or access to online presentations, please email: presse@iamo.de.

After two years as an online event, the IAMO Forum 2022 will again take place in presence in Halle (Saale). In addition, many sessions will be streamed online. The conference language will be English. The conference is organized by IAMO's Agricultural Policy Department and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), USA.

About IAMO

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyses economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transition regions of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO works to enhance the understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO studies the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyse strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its founding in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
