Conference “Social science knowledge and sustainable agricultural development along the Silk Road”

In order to stimulate the academic environment for the social sciences of agricultural development in Central Asia and to present the results of a number of ongoing research projects, IAMO together with Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME) co-organized a conference on “Social science knowledge and sustainable agricultural development along the Silk Road”. The conference took place from 30 October to 1 November 2018 at TIIAME in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Three days of the conference program comprised three plenary sessions, 16 parallel sessions with over 60 presentations and a panel discussion. The program included organized sessions by IAMO, the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), and a joint session organized by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT).

The panel discussion about the newly-established graduate school and the role of social sciences in sustainable agricultural development was hosted by the International Press Club and broadcasted over the national TV channel.


In total over 180 participants from over 20 nations took part in the conference to discuss the role of social science knowledge in sustainable agricultural development in Central Asia.

The conference was financially supported by the Volkswagen Foundation in the framework of the project “Institutional change in land and labour relations of Central Asia’s irrigated agriculture” (AGRICHANGE).
