Johnson Kansiime joined IAMO in November 2022 as a Doctoral Researcher within the RuWell project in the Department of Agricultural Policy.

He spent his early professional life working with International Non-Governmental Organizations (Technoserve Inc as Agronomy Advisor and the Danish Refugee Council as Livelihoods Officer) to support the design and implementation of rural livelihoods interventions in Uganda. Earlier, he had worked with Ibero’s Neumann Kaffee Gruppe project as Field Officer. He could later embark on a Master of Science Degree in Rural Development at Ghent University graduating summa cumlaude in late 2021. During this time he was involved in various case studies and course projects focusing on rural transition in Garfagnana, Italy and Nitra, Slovakia. In his Masters thesis, he built a household wealth index for smallholder farm families in Burundi and studied its linkage with food security and farm typologies.

Johnson Kansiime is currently investigating the multidimensional drivers of rural well-being and their effects on the im(mobility) decisions of rural people with a unique focus on place attachment. His geographical focus is East Germany and he is writing his Doctoral thesis in the same context.
