Agricultural value chains

In most transition economies, many factor and product markets, trade structures and vertically integrated value added chains only function to a limited degree. Non-existent or underdeveloped institutional framework conditions, a lack of information, monopolistic structures, high transaction costs and also direct political intervention and corruption interfere with the market-oriented coordination mechanisms. This research domain focuses on the coordination and competition processes along the agricultural and food value chain and on international markets. Studies in this research domain aim to analyse the relevant markets for agricultural producers, processing companies, wholesalers, retailers, and the consumer. Furthermore, they examine the interactions of the players in the economy along the whole value chain as well as the regional and global integration of the agricultural and food sector in transition economies.
