As part of this project, we examine how agricultural structural change not only enables the handling of challenges such as demographic change and increasing yield uncertainties but can also be understood as an opportunity. The anticipated trade-offs are addressed by illustrating the impact of structural change on various indicators of agriculture, including production, employment, and value creation. The analyses primarily rely on the spatially dynamic agricultural structure model AgriPoliS, applied in two model regions: the Altmark in Saxony-Anhalt and the Emsland in Lower Saxony, Germany. Scenarios are defined to encompass both changing conditions and potential policy interventions. Through simulations using AgriPoliS, the consequences of these challenges on agricultural structural adjustments and the ability of agricultural systems to fulfill their societal functions can be estimated. These findings will inform conclusions and recommendations for the agricultural sector and policy-making.
