Improving the research capacity of Central Asian countries is among the most important factors in developing the national economy and thus increasing overall welfare of citizens in these countries. In particular, transforming the higher education system may contribute to establishing modern and sustainable research capacities in the long run. Although several restructuring processes have been implemented in recent years, the current research capacity is still not in line with international standards. Against this backdrop, the overarching aim of this project is to contribute to transformation and internationalization of the higher education and research systems with an innovative pilot project. The pilot project considers novel approaches which contribute to the internationalization of the national research systems and re-integration of high-level scientists to Uzbekistan. A joint chair on “International Agricultural Economics” has been launched in Tashkent State Agrarian University (TSAU) in October 2018 in the scope of this project.
