Postdoctoral project: Becoming a young farmer in the digital age - an island perspective

Enabled by advances in information and communications technology, use of e-agriculture practices that are associated with new ways of working (NWW) in farms is a recent phenomenon. This phenomenon consists of increase in the use of digital applications for farming activities, to access both agricultural extension services and agricultural production marketing channels via internet. The project aims to adds new insights to the emerging literature on the effects of e-agriculture practices on farm work engagement with case studies in three EU islands: Crete, Cyprus and the Azores Islands. The cross-island study aims to provide robust explanations of similarities, differences, and how use of digital network may lead, converge or diverge results on farm engagement by considering young generation in farms.

Project partners


During the case study period, DFG (German Research Foundation) covered mobility and three-month research stay costs for German partner at Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (CIHEAM, MAICh), Crete, Greece (Project code: 433488472). EU COST - Rural NEET Youth Network covered mobility and three weeks research stay costs for German partner both at the University Institute of Lisbon and the Azores Islands, Portugal (project code: CA18213).
