Too much but not enough: Issues of water management in Albania

Research domain:
Natural resource use
Project duration:
30.04.2010 - 30.03.2015
Investigated countries:
Albania

This research project focuses on problems concerning the governance and management of Albania’s water sector. The aim is to provide explanations for three key issues: management of irrigation systems, resilience and adaptation of local communities to floods, and assessment of Albania’s water governance. More precisely, the study investigates what determinants affect collective action for canal maintenance; explores self-organization potentials and adaptation actions of local communities to adverse climate-induced events such as floods, as well as analyses the institutional arrangements at multiple levels that govern the water sector. These issues are important not only for the current development of Albania’s agriculture sector, but also for dealing with future uncertainties related to climate changes and EU integration processes.
