Red Meat Crisis – Determinants of Iran’s Red Meat Crisis: Multidisciplinary Analysis of Supply Chain Governance

The recent “red meat crisis” in Iran shows that there is no efficient supply chain for meat. This fact has consequences for the relevant sectors. According to the Iranian Statistical Center, in February 2019, lamb and beef prices were increased more than double compared to the same month in the year before. Unfortunately, massive increase of meat imports (approximately 200 percent) and the distribution of subsidized imported red meat (lamb) could not solve the crisis. Given this rapid price jump and the low level of income, many people are forced to remove meat. In that respect, the aim of this research project is to apply Production Network Analysis (PNA) to identify approaches to improve the efficiency of meat value chains in the province of Khorasan Rasavi.
