AGRIWANET – Agricultural Restructuring, Water Scarcity and the Adaptation to Climate Change in Central Asia: A Five-Country Study

Research domain:
Organisation of agriculture

Project duration:
01.04.2014 - 30.09.2016

+++ Within the scope of the project the IAAE Inter-Conference-Symposium "Agricultural Transitions along the Silk Road: Restructuring, Resources and Trade in the Central Asia Region" was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 4 - 6 April 2016. For detailed information see the conference website: www.iamo.de/silkroad. +++

Two decades after national independence, the five Central Asian nations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan (CA5) have various and unique records in the following areas: restructuring attempts and outcomes in agriculture; policy formation to address water-related problems; and strategies to tackle climate change. Research has progressed slowly, however, because there is little exchange of researchers between the CA5 countries, a lack of a centralized database, and existing studies focus on technical details. The objective of this pilot project for partnership in science, research and education is to tackle these obstacles on the way to an analytically sound and policy-relevant understanding of the water-farm restructuring nexus. The selection of the project consortium reflects the desire to improve analytical capacity and policy relevance from within the CA region. The project covers five country studies prepared by five teams of scientists, one from each CA5 country. The project cooperates with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, to complement the research portion, along with two summer schools and two networking events.
