This research project conducts theoretical and empirical economic research to better understand changes in rural areas. Changes are caused and characterized by demography and rural livelihoods, structural change, policies and institutions as well as supply chain developments. The employed analyses are theory-based and use state of the art methods, preferably a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, based on own surveys and other primary data. The core research within this project concentrates on empirical analyses of farm/rural households’ behavior and well-being across transition economies in China, as well as in eastern and southeastern Europe.
