IAMO organises panel discussion at the 22nd Economic Forum

The 22nd Economic Forum of the Foundation Institute for Eastern Studies will be held from 4 to 6 September 2012 in Krynica-Zdrój, Poland. The panel discussion titled ‘To Feed Europe: What will we eat tomorrow?’ of the international conference is co-organised by IAMO. Against the background of a tremendous change in the European agricultural sector the panel will discuss agricultural development, problems and potential solutions from different perspectives.

The Focus of the Common Agricultural Policy moved towards the production process, food quality and opportunities in renewable energies. Looking further east, Russian agriculture is characterised by substantial land abandonment in some regions on the one hand and a high political interest in supporting dairy production and technical modernisation on the other hand. Finally, requirements for a healthy and affordable diet impose challenges to agricultural and food markets.

The panel discussion will be held by Fernanda Guerrieri (Regional Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia, FAO), Ivan Kyrylenko (MP, former Minister of Agriculture, Ukraine), Joan Mier (Director on Foreign Relations, Government of Catalunya, Spain), Egle Stonkute (Advisor to the Prime Minister of Lithuania, Council of Ministers, Lithuania) and Paolo Russoa (Chairman of the Committee for Agriculture, MP, Italy) as well as presented by Thomas Herzfeld, director of IAMO in Germany.

About IAMO

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyses economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transition regions of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO works to enhance the understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO studies the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyse strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its founding in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
