Science Management Network holds sustainability workshop

“Sustainability - enable, control and manage” was the topic of the workshop held by the Science Management Network in Dresden on 29 June 2018. More than 20 participants from Central Germany came together to discuss ways of responsibly organising research management.

Academic institutes, as both employers and publicly funded organisations, have a responsibility towards the environment, society, and their employees in their respective fields of research. With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in mind, the workshop participants looked at the ways in which this responsibility has shaped developments in sustainability management in both university and non-university research institutes.

IAMO Director, Dr Stephanie Garling, spokeswoman for the Central German Regional Group, chaired the event. Dr Stephan Hülsmann from the United Nations University, UNU-FLORES, presented the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while Dr Doreen Kirmse, Vice President of the Leibniz Association, provided an overview of the Guidelines for Sustainability Management at Non-university Research Institutes (LENA). Julius Brinken from the sustainability office of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg gave insight into participation processes in universities and Dr Hagen Hilse, Managing Director of GICON GmbH, discussed the ways in which sustainable management can be evaluated and diversified with the support of the Ecological Project For Integrated Environmental Technology (ECOPROFIT®). Following the presentations, the participants from universities, non-university institutes and ministries had the opportunity to come together in an informal setting to network and discuss initiatives in Central Germany. The event was organised by Dr Stephanie Garling, Administrative Director of IAMO, together with Dr Andreas Otto, Deputy Director and Head of Science Management at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER).
