Research visit within the LaScalA project at the University of Missouri

From 23 November to 11 December 2019, Dr. Taras Gagalyuk, research associate at IAMO, was invited to spend a research stay at the University of Missouri. The visit was part of a longer-term collaboration with Prof. Willi Meyers (Missouri University) in the LaScalA project and followed Meyers' guest stay at IAMO in summer 2019. During his stay at MU, Taras was composing blog posts on the new farm land policies in Ukraine and several project papers. The two researchers also jointly prepared a symposium for the conference of the International Food and Agricultural Management Association (IFAMA), which will take place in Rotterdam in June 2020. Further joint work and visits to IAMO and MU are planned for 2020, including organized sessions at IFAMA and the European Congress of Agricultural Economists as well as a special issue of the IFAMR journal with project results on the LaScalA project, edited by Willi Meyers.

The international competence centre "Large Scale Agriculture in Developed and Transition Economies" (LaScaLa) is an IAMO-led international network of scientific institutions (including the MU) that investigates the organisational and ethical aspects of large-scale agriculture and the institutional framework conditions for the persistence of large farms. The aim of the project is to fill research gaps in the understanding the effects of large agricultural enterprises on the economic and social performance of the sector, on welfare and distributional justice in rural areas, and on competition in factor and output markets.
