Opening of Uzbek-German Chair on International Agricultural Economics

The opening ceremony of a joint chair between Tashkent State Agrarian University (TDAU) and IAMO on international agricultural economics took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on 29 October 2018.

The joint chair is established in the scope of the IAMO project “An Innovative Pilot Program on the Re-Integration of Scientists to Central Asia: Research and Capacity Building on Food Chains under Climate Change” (IPReS). Funded by Volkswagen foundation, the main objective of this project is to contribute to the modernization of education and research systems in Uzbekistan.

During the opening ceremony, the rector of TDAU, Professor Botirjon Sulaymonov, highlighted the relevance of this chair to strengthen the cooperation with German institutes and modernization of research system in Uzbekistan. Lena Kuhn indicated the value of this chair not only for establishing cooperation in field of science but also for carrying out empirical research and establishing partnerships with German and Uzbek businesses. The coordinator of this chair, Ihtiyor Bobojonov, mentioned the importance of recent reforms in Uzbekistan, which enabled the realization of this Uzbek-German project.

This chair is integrated to the national education system of Uzbekistan and coordinated by IAMO researcher Ihtiyor Bobojonov. Several capacity building activities and lectures will be provided by renowned professors from Germany. Three PhD students and two research assistants will be working in the newly established chair.
