New research results presented at SUSADICA workshop

On 2 and 3 March 2023 IAMO hosted a research workshop of the Structured Doctoral Programme on Sustainable Agricultural Development in Central Asia (SUSADICA). During the workshop doctoral students presented their research findings and plans for the following activities were prepared.

Doctoral students, supervisors, and project coordinators of the SUSADICA doctoral programme met at a two-day workshop in Halle (Saale) to present and discuss the research progress and implement the next steps in ongoing research and a road map of activities. The workshop was co-organized by the team from the Justus-Liebig-University Gießen (JLU), the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the National Research University Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME NRU). IAMO director Thomas Herzfeld and Martin Petrick, who is the project leader from JLU, launched the meeting.

During the sessions over the two days, the doctoral students from IAMO, MLU, and JLU presented their research findings on topics as governmentality in land reform, farm investment decisions, adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, agricultural liberalization and the changing role of women. Also the impact of weather shocks and livestock on poverty, tenure arrangements and farm performance as well as the impact of climate change on water supply were discussed.

On the second day of the workshop, the vice-rector of TIIAME NRU Abdulkhakim Salokhiddinov and the local coordinator of the project Sherzod Murodov presented the next steps in SUSADICA programme implementation. While discussing the plans for this year, it was agreed that the SUSADICA partners will organize an academic symposium in TIIAME NRU in October 2023.

The SUSADICA doctoral programme is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and the Uzbek agency of Innovative Development. It aims at conducting cutting-edge research at international standards on topics of regional and international relevance, strengthening graduate education in the field of agricultural development in Central Asia and contributing to the academic environment in TIIAME NRU.
