International Bioeconomy Conference of the ScienceCampus Halle

Many of the well-known German representatives in the field of bioeconomy and renowned foreign scientists from Singapore/Malaysia to Berkeley/California had confirmed their participation in this year's conference of the ScienceCampus Halle (WCH) entitled “From Molecule to Society" on 6th and 7th June 2013. Unfortunately, this conference, too, had to be cancelled only days before the opening due to the unusually high flood in the Halle region. Nevertheless, about 80 participants attended a spontaneously organized substitute program with the already arrived national and foreign speakers.

Professor David B. Zilberman of the University of California, Berkeley (USA), one of the world's leading agricultural economists, showed in his presentation that the potential of genetically modified crops has not been tapped yet. Professor Wesseler of the TU Munich confirmed this statement and explained in his presentation why the importance of the agricultural value chain has been rising for the past 20 years and that the political clout increases as well in themes of the sustainability triangle (ecological, economical and social). Following these two socioeconomic lectures, Professor Hesham A. El Enshasy from Johor Bahru/Malaysia, in his presentations provided examples for the challenge to transfer technology from basic research through applied research to industry and into the market and finally to the consumer. The substitute program was made perfect by four short presentations of current WCH collaborative projects.

As an interdisciplinary interface, the ScienceCampus Halle links the region’s four Leibniz-Institutes –  one of them IAMO – with the corresponding departments and institutes of Halle-Wittenberg University working in the field of plant-based bioeconomy.

We would like to invite you to our next conference, which will take place on 22nd and 23rd May 2014.
