IAMO researchers present report on “Efficiency and Profitability of Ukrainian Plant Production”

The research results of IAMO researchers Dr. Marten Graubner and Igor Ostapchuk were presented at the Round Table on “Analysis of the Productivity of Agricultural Enterprises – the Example of Plant Production” on 28 September 2018 in Kiev, Ukraine.

The event was opened by APD project leader Dr. Volker Sasse with the provocative question: “Why do considerable productivity potentials in agriculture exist as compared to international standards despite good technical production conditions in Ukraine?”

Dr. Marten Graubner presented the report on “Efficiency and Profitability of Ukrainian Plant Production”. He referred to the yield potentials of Ukraine in comparison to comparable technical and natural conditions in other countries. Although highly productive industrial producers achieve top yields, the average use of operating resources in Ukraine is lower, which has an impact on average crop yields. Provided that plant producers behave in a manner appropriate to the market, the intensity level observed can be interpreted as an indicator of profit maximization (per hectare), if expensive production factors such as fertilizers and pesticides are only used to a limited extent.

In addition to Dr. Volker Sasse, Pavlo Koval, General Director of the “Ukrainian Agricultural Confederation”, Olga Khodakivska, Head of the Department of Soil Matters at the National Science Centre of Ukraine “Institute of Agricultural Economics” (IAE), Siuzanna Grygorenko, Director of the Seed Breeding Association of Ukraine and Petro Lakhai, Agricultural Market Analyst at the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB) participated in the subsequent panel discussion.

About 70 representatives from science and agriculture discussed the connection between profit and crop yields at the event of the German-Ukrainian Agricultural Policy Dialogue in cooperation with the National Science Centre of Ukraine “Institute for Agricultural Economics” (IAE).
