IAMO researcher invited as speaker to conferences in Ukraine

The VII Ukrainian Dairy Congress, hosted by the Dykun Company and the Association of Milk Producers from 18 to 20 March 2014 in Kiev, Ukraine, was attended by IAMO researcher Dr. Oleksander Perekhozhuk who gave – at the request of the German-Ukrainian Agricultural Policy Dialogue (APD) – a invited lecture on "New export potentials for the Ukrainian dairy sector – example: EU".

Perekhozhuk discussed in his presentation empiric research findings of an IAMO project on the market power of Ukrainian raw milk processing plants. There are two categories of milk producers in Ukraine: dairy farms (approx. 11,000 enterprises) and about 2.7 million so-called household farms with typically one or two dairy cows. The average livestock of a dairy farm in Ukraine is about 250 dairy cows. IAMO calculations based on a market structure model suggest that revenue losses of milk producers due to oligopolistic price formation in the Ukrainian raw milk market on average amounted to USD 447.00 per month for a dairy farm and about USD 1.10 for a household farm in the period from January 1996 to December 2003. The comprehensive findings presented in his paper were published in the Ukrainian journal "DEN" in Ukrainian and Russian versions and in "Agrarwirtschaft" in English.

Michael Grings, professor, Institute of Agricultural and Food Sciences, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and IAMO senior researcher Dr. Oleksander Perekhozhuk attended as guest lecturers a continuing education seminar hosted by the National Science Center "Institute of Agricultural Economics" and the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences in Kiev, Ukraine, from 17 to 21 March 2014. The two scientists presented to more than 40 research associates, teaching staff and lecturers a seminar titled "Production economics: Theoretical and applied analyses". Grings gave lectures on dual description of production technologies, technical change and productivity measurement as well as model building, parameter estimation and hypothesis testing. Perekhozhuk discussed in his lectures the empirical application of the statistical program R and handling of datasets and statistical packages, fundamentals of regression analyses and test statistics as well as estimation and interpretation of estimated results of Cobb-Douglas and Translog production functions. The seminar was wrapped up by the participants taking an exam and festive bestowing of certificates.
