For the first time in IAMO’s history a group of IAMO PhD students organized and conducted a field visit to Georgia on September 22-26, 2014. The visit encompassed series of stimulating meetings with local experts and site visits. This student-led initiative was designed to provide a hands-on practical experience related to agricultural and rural development in a transition context. International School of Economics at Tbilisi State University (ISET) helped organize a number of invigorating and informative panel discussions with leading experts of the field along with discussion rounds with Georgian students studying economics and agricultural economics. Among the participants it is worth pointing out Georgian Farmers Association, GIZ, USAID, EU Delegation to Georgia along with others. The participants have primarily focused on the modes of Georgian agricultural sector development and the role of the government, EU Association Agreement, FDI, technology, rural tourism, etc. in these transition processes.
