German-Ukrainian Agricultural Economics Summer School

The German-Ukrainian Summer School in Agricultural Economics “Foundations of Agricultural Economics” was held from 3 to 17 March, 2019 at IAMO in Halle (Saale), Germany.

Twenty participants came from eleven Ukrainian agricultural universities, research and government institutions, including Dnipro State Agrarian and Economic University and CoopAcademy, Kyiv School of Economics, National Bank of Ukraine, National Research Center “Institute of Agrarian Economics” and National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine which located in Kyiv, Poltava State Agrarian Academy, Separated Subdivision of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine “Berezhany Agrotechnical Institute”, Sumy National Agrarian University, Tavria State Agrotechnological University located in Melitopol, Vinnytsia Institute of Trade and Economics and Zhytomyr National Agroecological University.

The Ukrainian doctoral students were taught theoretical concepts of the economy for the evaluation of agricultural policy measures. They comprehended the peculiarities of agricultural market analyses, concepts and methods of empirical welfare analysis, as well as governance problems and agricultural policy interventions. Besides the lectures and seminars, participants of the summer school were acquainted with the results of scientific research of IAMO`s scientists and doctoral candidates. Twelve researchers gave scientific presentations and discussed their research findings with the summer school participants.

At the same time, the participants gained insight into the German internal and external research system of agricultural science. They were also acquainted with the admission requirements to doctoral studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. An open discussion on the “Reforms of Higher Education and Scientific Research System in Agricultural Economics in Ukraine” took place in the framework of the summer school.

Furthermore, the summer school’s participants visited agricultural company Agrarunternehmen Barnstädt e.G in Nemsdorf-Göhrendorf, traditional and organic farm Agrargesellschaft Prießnitz mbH, dairy processing enterprise - frischli Milchwerks Weißenfels GmbH in Weißenfels and sparkling wine producer - Rotkäppchen-Mumm Sektkellereien GmbH in Freyburg (Unstrut), in the vicinity of Saxony-Anhalt. Additionally, the participants of the summer school have guided tours through the historic places of the old town in Halle (Saale), Weißenfels, Freyburg (Unstrut), Naumburg, Leipzig and Querfurt. There were walking tours around Weinberg Campus, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and IAMO in Halle (Saale) as well as the University of Leipzig.

This summer school was organized by the Institute of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Halle (Saale), Germany, in cooperation with IAMO, Halle (Saale), Germany, and the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), Kiev, Ukraine. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) financed this summer school through the funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA).
