New Leibniz ScienceCampus in Central Germany

The Leibniz Association will sponsor a new ScienceCampus focusing on “Eastern Europe - Global Area” in Leipzig for the duration of four years.

Managed by the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), the ScienceCampus will be organized by the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) in Halle (Saale), the Universities of Leipzig, Halle-Wittenberg and Jena, the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle (Saale), the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy in Leipzig as well as Center for the History and Culture of East Central Europe in Leipzig.

Within the scope of the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Eastern Europe - Global Area”, the global connections of Eastern Europe will be researched in the context of migration, economic interrelations, cultural exchange and political integration processes. The scientists working together on Campus study how Eastern European societies position themselves in global processes and conflicts. They connect the education of young researchers with international and interdisciplinary degree programs, due to the concentration of existing expertise on Eastern Europe in Central Germany. Special attention is paid to the communication of research results beyond the academic area, especially to the media and the broader public.

“The new Leibniz Campus in Central Germany will influence the future research of and in the Eastern European and Central Asian countries in the context of global challenges. It enables outstanding interdisciplinary cooperations between IAMO, universities and non-university institutions in the range of research and transfer activities as well as education and training offers “, says IAMO director Prof. Dr. Thomas Glauben.

About the Leibniz ScienceCampi

The Leibniz ScienceCampus model is the Leibniz Association's answer to the often lamented parallel existence of university and non-university research (“pillarisation”) in the German research system. Leibniz ScienceCampi promote cooperation on an equal footing between Leibniz institutions and universities in the form of thematically-focused, complementary regional partnerships. The objective is to create networks to drive the respective research field and to strengthen the scientific environment for the relevant themes. The networks conduct strategic research, encourage interdisciplinarity in their topics, projects and methods, enhance the visibility of the respective location and hone its research profile. Jointly with the new Leibniz ScienceCampi will be existing 19 university cooperation attwelve locations in Germany.
