IAMO involved in new DFG-funded research unit on land markets

© Marcin Mrówka / Fotolia.com

Agricultural land prices have steadily increased over the past decade in many parts of the world. The German Research Foundation (DFG), together with the Austrian Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF), supports the research unit "Agricultural Land Markets - Efficiency and Regulation" (FORLand) to better understand the reasons and effects of this price increase. The research unit is concerned with various questions on the functioning and efficiency of agricultural soil markets, with a goal of gaining a better understanding of the development of purchase and lease prices for agricultural land, to better understand price formation and development, and to better evaluate the impact of rising prices on social and ecological sustainability. The research unit is coordinated by Martin Odening from Humboldt-Universtität zu Berlin, Germany, and by Silke Hüttel, University of Bonn, Germany. Additional project partners are the Technical University, Berlin, Germany, and the University of Göttingen, Germany, as well as the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria. IAMO researchers Alfons Balmann, Daniel Müller, and Vladislav Valentinov are each coordinating a subproject within FORLand.

There currently is an open postdoc position at IAMO for the subproject "Ethical issues in agricultural land markets." The application deadline is 30 September. More informationen

"SUstainable and REsilient EU FARMing systems" SURE-Farm is a new Horizon 2020-project at IAMO. It encompasses 16 partners from 13 countries, led by the University of Wageningen. The aim of the four-year project is to evolve possibilities to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of EU agricultural systems and farms. SURE-Farm includes the development of a framework to measure determinants of resilience, the potential improvement of risk management strategies, the analysis of drivers of agricultural demography and the development of a tool to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the existing policy framework, in particular the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). IAMO has the lead for the work package "Farm demographics" that is related to simulate generational change by using the agent-based model AgriPoliS.

New research project on animal husbandry in Central Asia

IAMO is making an even greater impact in Central Asia. The research on agricultural restructuring, water scarcity, and the adaptation to climate change in the region accomplished in the AGRIWANET project is now complemented by the analysis of animal husbandry in Central Asia. The project "Revitalizing animal husbandry in Central Asia: A five-country analysis" (ANICANET) began 1 July 2017. ANICANET is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and administered with partners from the United Kingdom, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. IAMO researchers Martin Petrick and Nodir Djanibekov aim to gain empirically founded insights into strategies stimulating the revitalization of livestock husbandry in the five Central Asian countries. After the collapse of Soviet livestock herds in the 1990s, all five countries struggled with finding a suitable development strategy for their livestock sectors. As in many transition and developing countries worldwide, increasing incomes of the urban population have stimulated demand for livestock products in the region.

A summer school within the framework of ANICANET will be held from 25 - 29 September 2017 at IAMO, Halle (Saale), Germany. The participants will learn more about quantitative analysis of animal husbandry in Central Asia. More information

© Elenathewise / Fotolia.com

The IAMO Forum 2018 "Large-scale agriculture – for profit and society?" and will be held from 27 – 29 June 2018 at IAMO in Halle (Saale), Germany. The deadline for submission of extended abstracts is 25 February 2018. Proposals for organized sessions are welcome until 28 January 2018. In recent decades, new agribusiness models have emerged in a number of transition, emerging, and developed economies. Their main characteristics include a very large size, sometimes exceeding one hundred thousand hectares of farmland, integration of multiple stages of production and processing, and presence of investors who often have no background in primary agriculture. The IAMO Forum 2018 provides a platform for research that investigates the economic, managerial, and social aspects of large-scale agriculture as well as institutional frameworks that enable the persistence of large agricultural enterprises. Extended abstracts can be submitted until 25 February, proposals for organized sessions until 28 January 2018. The conference’s geographical focus is particularly on the transition countries of Eastern Europe, the Former Soviet Union, and East Asia, as well as developed and emerging countries in Europe, the Americas, and Australia. For more information on the conference and the call for submissions see www.iamo.de/forum/2018. The conference is organized with support of the 2017 established "International Competence Center on Large Scale Agriculture" (LaScalA).

IAMO Policy Brief 32 on EU-Georgia Trade Agreement issued

IAMO Policy Brief 32 published. Photo: Daniela Schimming

"The EU-Georgia Trade Agreement: The Impact on Agricultural Trade and Welfare" is the title of the most recent research results by IAMO Visiting Research Fellow Ulrich Koester, published in August 2017. September 2014 saw the signing of the so-called Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) between the European Union (EU) and Georgia. The agreement took effect two years later, enabling both partners to trade within the scope of the specified conditions. The aim is for the Georgian economy to gradually become integrated into that of Europe, bringing a higher degree of welfare to the country. The effects that this free trade agreement could have on agricultural and food products, their trade, and the living standards of the Georgian population are analyzed in IAMO Policy Brief 32. The publication also presents various measures for improving the adaptation of the agricultural sector and the food industry in Georgia and the new opportunities that will arise via the agreement.

The IAMO Policy Brief 32 is available in German and English. The publication can be viewed and downloaded for free at the following address: www.iamo.de/en/publications/iamo-policy-briefs.
