IAMO evaluated positively

IAMO building in Halle (Saale), Germany © IAMO

The senate of the Leibniz Association announced the results of the evaluation of IAMO on 13 July. In its advisory opinion, the senate recommends the continued joint funding by the federal government and the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt over the next seven years. IAMO is a research institute of national scientific interests and supraregional importance. The senate has certified IAMO as successful in fulfilling its mandate to academically monitor the transition process of agriculture and to study its economic and social impacts. In particular, it stresses the "remarkable and important thematic and methodological range" of the research done at IAMO, which is also "highly acknowledged in the target countries". The senate arrived at this evaluation based on a two-day assessment of the IAMO in November 2015 by an independent commission of experts with relevant experience in the field.
At least every seven years, as is the norm for Leibniz Institutes, a commission of experts evaluates the developments of an institute in terms of project nature and structure. The expert opinion covers the work in the preceding years as well as the plans for the future.

President of the Leibniz Association visited the institute

Matthias Kleiner in dialogue with IAMO scientists © IAMO

On 14 September Matthias Kleiner, president of the Leibniz Association, visited IAMO in Halle (Saale), Germany, for the second time during his term in office. He had several discussions with the institute management, the postdoctoral researchers and the postgraduate students. In doing so, the president obtained an impression of the institute’s current and future planned research activities. Among others, Matthias Kleiner and the IAMO scientists lively discussed IAMO research projects about the agricultural trade between the EU and the successor states of the former Soviet Union (AGRICISTRADE) respectively about those that analyse the importance of so-called "bioclusters" (TRAFOBIT). The focus was also on research projects about healthy diet, migration and rural areas as well as the international orientation of the institute.
The IAMO is part of one of the Leibniz Association’s 88 independent research institutions studying relevant social, economic and ecological issues. Leibniz institutes focus on the transfer of knowledge, maintain close cooperation with universities, and advise and inform politics, science, industry and the public.

IAMO Forum 2017

Presentations at the IAMO Forum © IAMO

IAMO, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), will organize the IAMO Forum 2017, to be held 21 to 23 June 2017 in Halle (Saale), Germany. The conference will deal with "Eurasian Food Economy between Globalization and Geopolitics". Globalization makes it imperative for Eurasian transition countries to create open and internationally competitive food economies. At the same time a number of governments are strengthening their control of domestic food chains in order to support their agro-food sector or to improve food security. IAMO Forum 2017 aims to provide a platform to discuss ongoing research and different strategies to ensure food security and intensify trade in the context of geopolitical tensions and divergent trade integration efforts. We welcome papers that analyze the impact of globalization and different crises on food chain actors, national and international markets, trade flows, food security, and policy in transition economies.

More information, including deadlines for submissions, will soon be available on the conference website

Trade fair in Hanover, Germany © Daniela Schimming / IAMO

The EuroTier in Hanover, Germany, is the world’s leading trade fair for animal production. On 17 November IAMO will host the forum event "Milk, Market, and Power: Who Influences the Milk Price?". The forum will provide the interested public with an overview of the current situation on the German milk and dairy markets. Even before the end of the milk quota in April 2015, the milk market has been characterized by extreme price fluctuations. Currently, the bargaining position of milk farmers as well as milk pricing strategies and practices on the markets are being discussed controversially in the public. During the forum event, representatives of the different value chain stages will discuss the problems in the production, processing, and marketing of milk and dairy products and anticipated future developments.

Scientist honoured with Luther certificate

Luther certificate ot the University Halle-Wittenberg © IAMO

In July 2016, Christine Burggraf was honoured by Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg with the Luther certificate for her outstanding research on the topic "Russian Demand for Dietary Quality: Nutrition Transition, Diet Quality Measurement, and Health Investment Theory". In her work, the IAMO scientist describes the development of Russian dietary patterns in the course of the post-socialist transformation, searches for reasons for the choice of healthier dietary patterns using newly developed methods, and offers recommendations for improving diet quality. The increasing prevalence of obesity and diet-related chronic illnesses is a key problem for Russian households and healthcare systems. Study results show that in addition to prices, income and other socio-economic influencing factors, the current state of health as well as the consumer’s time preference influence demand decisions for healthier dietary patterns.

IAMO Policy Brief 27 and 29 issued

IAMO Policy Brief 27 and 29 © IAMO

Institute director Thomas Glauben and IAMO scientist Christine Burggraf published the IAMO Policy Brief 27 on the topic "Economic Transformation, Altered Nutritional Habits and Health Implications in Russia" in June. The authors discuss to what extent food consumption in the Russian population has changed due to economic growth, how these changed dietary patterns are associated with the risk of certain chronic diseases, and what steps can be taken to promote a healthier diet.

IAMO visiting research fellow Ulrich Koester and scientist Jens-Peter Loy, both professors in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel, published the 29th edition of the IAMO Policy Brief entitled "Policy Evaluation on the Basis of the Farm Accountancy Data Network" in August. In it the authors clarify whether the European Commission is able to implement the agricultural policy measures. These are based on the effectiveness of direct payments and the information network with the underlying data of the agricultural enterprises.

JAE special feature on the functionality of agricultural markets

Journal of Agricultural Economics © IAMO

Initiated by IAMO, the current edition of the Journal of Agricultural Economics contains a special feature about the functioning of agricultural markets in transformation countries. The five articles compiled by guest editors of the institute are based on contributions to the IAMO Forum "The Rise of the Emerging Economies: Towards Functioning Agricultural Markets and Trade Relations". Most of the articles examine price formation in international agricultural markets. Price turbulences over the last 10 years and the trade policy reactions they have triggered are receiving special attention, not only by a specialist audience. In their editorial, the publishers discuss conceptual and methodological challenges in measuring the functionality of markets.

The articles are available here in the September issue of the Journal of Agricultural Economics.
