The institute celebrated “25 Years of IAMO” with a ceremony at the IAMO Forum 2019. On 26 June 2019, a large number of guests from science, politics and society came to Halle (Saale), Germany, to convey their congratulations in person. In their welcoming addresses, the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), Michael Stübgen, the State Secretary in the Ministry of Science of Saxony-Anhalt, Thomas Wünsch, and Leibniz President Matthias Kleiner praised the institute's achievements in research on the agricultural and food sector in the former central plan countries of East and Southeast Europe, Central Asia and China. The networking and exchange with the partner institutions in the target countries, the interdisciplinarity and methodological range of the research topics, the promotion of young scientists as well as the committed third-party funding strategy of the institute were particularly appreciated. In the ceremonial address that followed, the renowned economist Aleksander V. Gevorkyan from St. John's University in New York, USA, discussed the transformation of European agriculture since the political shift 30 years ago. Finally, the more than 200 honorary guests, conference participants and staff from around 30 different countries gathered to cut the anniversary cake and have a drink on the institute's grounds.

As a cooperation partner, IAMO supports the 10th International Conference “Large Farm Management” (LFM) in Kiev, Ukraine, on 18 September 2019. It is the only business conference in CIS and Europe that fully covers all the major aspects of successful farm management. On 12 June 2019, IAMO participated in the 2nd meeting of the German-Uzbek Government Working Group on Agriculture of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. IAMO Director Thomas Glauben and the scientists Ihtiyor Bobojonov and Lena Kuhn were members of the expert group of the German government delegation led by Parliamentary State Secretary Michael Stübgen. In an intensive exchange with the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Jamshid Khodjaev, and other representatives of the Uzbek Ministry of Agriculture, research institutions and associations, it was decided to intensify cooperation, especially in the field of certified agriculture, digitization and export promotion. Following the meeting, Thomas Glauben and Nasriddin Najimov, Agency of Horticulture and Greenhouse Development under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation between the two institutions.

Once a year, the Leibniz Association organizes an event entitled “Leibniz in the Bundestag”. In this context, IAMO Director Alfons Balmann met with two members of parliament for bilateral talks in the German Bundestag in Berlin, Germany, on 4 June 2019. In an exchange with MP Caren Lay (DIE LINKE), Alfons Balmann gave a scientific assessment of land markets and land market regulation. The agricultural economist spoke with MP Hermann Färber (CDU) about the social responsibility of agriculture and considerations on limiting and redistributing EU direct payments.

Despite the relatively short project duration of three years, the twinning project “Building an Excellency Network for Heightening Agricultural Economic Research and Education in Romania” (ENHANCE), funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 Research Framework Programme, was assessed as very successful by the EU. Against the background of the still very important position of the agricultural and food sector in the Romanian economy, (future) agricultural economists need a profound understanding of modern micro- and macroeconomic methods and techniques. This knowledge was imparted by the international partners in the form of workshops and summer schools. The events were specifically aimed at master students, PhD students and staff members of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest (USAMV), Romania, but also at other universities in the country and in other transition countries. The EU emphasized that ENHANCE has decisively strengthened the position of the USAMV as an educational and research institution in agricultural economics. Under the leadership of the USAMV, the project was carried out by IAMO together with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Austria, and the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (Agroscope), Switzerland, from 2016 to 2018.

The EU HORIZON 2020 funded project “Understanding Food Value Chains and Network Dynamics” (VALUMICS) published first results related to fairer trading practices, food integrity and sustainability collaborations in EU food value chains. By conducting the stakeholders' surveys across selected European countries, including both EU and EEA Member States countries, the issue of fairer trading practices and transparency are identified as a core obstacle for food value chain stakeholders in all five selected case studies (salmon to fillets, wheat to bread, beef cattle to steak, dairy cows to milk and tomato to canned tomato). The project objective is to open new perspectives for policy makers, both in government and within the food industry sector, based on new modelling approaches, consumer research, foresight analysis and synthesis into policy options.

The interactive simulation game FarmAgriPoliS has recently become available for international users. With FarmAgriPoliS, players can run an agricultural business in competition with computer-controlled neighboring companies. As part of the research group “Structural Change in Agriculture” (SiAg), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the business simulation was developed for behavioral experiments on the strategic management of farms between 2011 and 2014. The game was derived from the spatial-dynamic agent-based agricultural structure model AgriPoliS. With the support of the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank, the interactive simulation game FarmAgriPoliS was made available to the German-speaking public for testing their own agricultural management skills in 2016.

In June 2019, IAMO launched a new project on “Determinants of Iran’s Red Meat Crisis: Multidisciplinary Analysis of Supply Chain Governance” (Red Meat Crisis). The recent “red meat crisis” in Iran shows that there is no efficient supply chain for meat. This fact has consequences for the relevant sectors. According to the Iranian Statistical Center, in February 2019, lamb and beef prices were increased more than double compared to the same month in the year before. Unfortunately, massive increase of meat imports (approximately 200 percent) and the distribution of subsidized imported red meat (lamb) could not solve the crisis. Given this rapid price jump and the low level of income, many people are forced to remove meat. In that respect, the aim of this research project is to apply Production Network Analysis (PNA) to identify approaches to improve the efficiency of meat value chains in the province of Khorasan Rasavi. The one-year project is part of the Leibniz Research Alliances “Crises in a Globalised World”. Further information on the project can be found here.

As part of the project “The Ethics and Economics of Modern Agricultural Myths” (AgriMyths), IAMO is examining the background to why green genetic engineering has been provoking such a heated debate among consumers for decades. Although science almost agrees that green genetic engineering is no riskier than conventional breeding methods, many German consumers are still very uncertain about genetically modified food. Together with the Chair of Business Ethics at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, IAMO is researching the factors that influence attitudes towards new technologies and are related to the image building and acceptance of green genetic engineering. The project is supported by the ScienceCampus Halle – Plant-based Bioeconomy (WCH) by funds of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt and the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE).

With the exhibition project “25 Years of IAMO - Faces of Diversity” and its participation in the German Diversity Day in Halle (Saale), Germany, IAMO is committed to its diverse institute culture and sets an example of cosmopolitanism, tolerance and respect.
The exhibition “25 Years of IAMO - Faces of Diversity” was presented to a public audience for the first time during the Long Night of Science in Halle (Saale) on 5 July 2019. The portraits and statements by IAMO staff illustrate the diverse institute culture that has been lived and developed at IAMO over the past 25 years. The participants were asked what a diverse society means to them, what they value about it and where they see the challenges for it. The project was initiated and implemented by Franziska Appel and Sven Dryja.

On 28 May 2019, IAMO participated in the 7th German Diversity Day together with local institutions of the Leibniz Association from Halle (Saale). Visitors to the marketplace were invited to create a mosaic of colorful and multifaceted stones with the logo of the Leibniz Association consisting of blue stones in the middle. With this campaign, Franziska Appel, Equal Opportunities Commissioner, and Miao-ling Hasenkamp, Equality and Diversity Coordinator, wanted to illustrate the high importance of cosmopolitanism, tolerance and respect in the Leibniz Association. The Diversity Day takes place annually as a nationwide action day of the association “Charter of Diversity”.

During an official ceremony on 13 June 2019, stated to award to IAMO Director Thomas Glauben the title of “Honorary Doctor of Science” (Dr. h.c.) of Tashkent State Agrarian University, Uzbekistan, for great achievements in development of education and agricultural science. +++ IAMO scientist Lijuan Miao has been awarded one of three Best Paper Awards at the 1st iEMSs Regional Conference in Nanjing, China, on 19 May 2019. +++ On 13 May 2019, Nadine Wettstein successfully defended her doctoral thesis on “Brand Loyalty in Food - an Analysis under Consideration of Dynamic Processes on the Example of Frozen Pizza in Germany between 2000 and 2008” +++ Another IAMO scientist, Iroda Amirova, successfully defended her dissertation entitled “Collective Action, Institutions and the Evolution of Central Asian Irrigation Water Governance” on 17 June 2019. +++ IAMO is pleased to welcome the scientists Shovkat Khodjaev, Barchynai Kimsanova, Hongbin Liu, Daniel Schau, the Coordinator for Equality and Diversity, Miao-ling Hasenkamp, as well as Sina Ziegner in the field of processing of external funds and accounting as new staff members.
