IAMO organises workshops on dealing with prejudices and discrimination

Several workshops for IAMO staff to raise awareness in dealing with prejudice and discrimination will take place at the institute in Halle (Saale), Germany, from November 2019 to October 2020. The aim is to promote open and respectful interaction between employees and thus to sustainably preserve a pleasant working atmosphere. With this preventive approach IAMO is setting an example in the Leibniz Association and in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

The participants are sensitized to the topic, informed about their rights and receive important recommendations for dealing with discrimination, harassment and bullying. The findings from the workshop help to better classify the appropriateness of behaviour in the workplace, to raise awareness of the dimensions of discrimination and to recognise the effect of one's own behaviour. After participating in one of the workshops, employees receive a certificate.

IAMO is shaped by a multicultural working environment of colleagues due to the researched regions of Europe as well as Central and East Asia. The potentials and challenges associated with this diversity for joint work at the institute must be further developed for the future. The workshops in German and English contribute decisively to this.

“The sessions that have already taken place were met with great interest and positive response by the participants. Particularly relevant topics and group work will be explored in depth in next year's workshops. Employees also expressed the desire for further meetings for open discussions on prejudices and discrimination,” said Dr. Miao-ling Hasenkamp, coordinator for equality and diversity.
