Workshop: Functional labor market in Ukraine's agriculture for resilient and sustainable development of the sector

The workshop on the labor market in Ukraine's agriculture will take place in Halle (Saale), Germany, from 24 to 26 June 2024.

About the workshop

A skilled labor force is crucial for the agricultural sector and the vitality of rural areas to ensure resilient production systems and sustain growth and rural development. Ukraine's agriculture is facing big challenges with the supply of qualified labor, especially young workers, due to structural, demographic, and technological changes on the one hand and the ongoing Russian aggression on the other. To address these challenges, it is necessary to gain an in-depth understanding of existing labor market deficits and disparities in Ukrainian agriculture, as well as the underlying reasons.

The workshop on "Functional labor market in Ukraine's agriculture for resilient and sustainable development of the sector" aims to exchange on the problems of and prospects for the development of the labor market in the agricultural sector of Ukraine and to contribute to more robust knowledge on the factors that influence the functioning of the labor markets in modern agriculture. The event will offer the opportunity for researchers and experts from Ukraine and Germany to present and discuss their ongoing research results and opinions on developments and challenges in the labor market and provide a platform for multi-level dialogue with the representatives of civil society, agribusiness, and politics with regard to innovative solutions and strategies to overcome labor market problems.

The three-day workshop will be held in Halle (Saale), Germany, from 24 to 26 June 2024. The official language of the workshop is English.

  • Current and prospective developments in Ukrainian agri-food labor market
  • Labor market deficits and disparities in the agri-food sector
  • Tensions between labor market actors
  • Role of formal and informal institutions for the stabilization of the labor market
  • Factors influencing the career choices of youth in agriculture
  • Agricultural labor market, productivity growth, and rural development
  • Labor market and structural change
