Long Night of Sciences Halle

+++ Photos of the Long Night of Science at IAMO +++

IAMO will present itself during the 14th Long Night of Sciences in Halle (Saale) with a comprehensive program focusing on topics from the agricultural and food sector. Besides the lectures there will be guided tours through the IAMO building, an art exhibition and several participation activities such as petting zoo, milking competition and tractor race.


PETTING ZOO / 5.00-9.00 pm
The sheep are on the loose /// Sheep are one of the oldest farm animals playing a vital role as provider of milk, meat, wool, and fur for humans. Learn interesting facts about sheep farming and meet the frugal animals at first hand.

On your milking stool, ready, milk away! /// Traditional milking of a cow by hand requires a great deal of intuitive feel, especially when speed is what matters. A life-size plastic cow will be provided to test your skills as a dairy farmer.

TRACTOR RACE / 5.00-10.30 pm
The tractors are ready /// Participate in our obstacle course on a pedal tractor through rough terrain. Older children can test the possibilities of modern agricultural engineering with a remote-controlled tractor of the John Deere Junior Club.

PRIZE COMPETITION / 5.00-10.30 pm
Quiz for the young and the young at heart /// How do you call a reaped grain field? How many liters does a cow give per day? Our scientists will use their expertise to lead you on the right track.

ART EXHIBITION / 5.00-10.30 pm
Colourful expression /// Franziska Appel invites you to have a look at her expressionist like illustrations of mainly pets and farm animals in a colourful exhibition in a window aisle of the IAMO building.

GUIDED TOUR  / 7.30-8.00, 8.00-8.30, 8.30-9.00 pm
Architectour /// In the middle of the 1990s the former officer's casino of the school of army and air force corps of signals was remodeled into the new home of the agricultural institute. Then architect Jürgen Ebert takes you on a historical trip through the building.

INFORMATION DESK / 5.00-10.30 pm
Get insight into science /// What does the plant pigment anthocyanin cause in grain and what does violet bread taste like? These and other interesting research studies will be presented by IAMO scientists in cooperation with ScienceCampus Halle.

LECTURE / 6.30-7.00 pm
Grain trade in the CIS /// Russia and Kazakhstan are major wheat exporters in the region. Which political and/or economic factors determine trade relations of net wheat exporters towards import dependent Central Asian and the Caucasian countries? (in German only) Speaker: Nurzat Baisakova
