Atabek Umirbekov joined IAMO in 2019 as a doctoral researcher in the Department of Structural Change. He holds an MSc (Master of Science) in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford, UK. Prior to IAMO, Atabek Umirbekov had been working for more than 10 years as a climate change specialist within a number of development projects in Central Asia. During that experience he focused on enhancing access to improved climate change knowledge services in Central Asia, and rising local technical capacities for addressing climate challenges in the region. Atabek Umirbekov is a member of the IAMO Land Systems Group and his current research explores the impacts of climate variability and change on the water availability and irrigated crop production in Central Asia.
