The overarching goal of my research program is to advance our understanding of land-system change, including its multiple repercussions on human welfare, food production, carbon balance and biodiversity. I have approached these issues through quantitative and qualitative assessments alike, and my work is characterized by integrative approaches that combine my expertise in resource economics and natural sciences. I apply a wide range of methods and conduct empirical work at different spatial scales. The current geographic focus of my work is Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Southeast Asia, and Western China.
