At its 30th annual conference in Berlin, the Leibniz Association announced the funding of eight new female Leibniz professors, including IAMO scientist Kathleen Hermans, within the framework of the Leibniz Competition 2025. She is investigating how land degradation, climate change and social vulnerabilities influence migration. The professorship program promotes excellent female scientists and strengthens gender equality and cooperation with universities. Our warmest congratulations!

+++ In October 2024, IAMO scientist Antje Jantsch joined the World Wellbeing Panel (WWP) as an expert. The WWP is committed to promoting well-being and quality of life as the top priority for policymakers. +++ In 2024, a total of 9 dissertations supervised by IAMO were successfully completed. Since September, four researchers at IAMO have successfully defended their work: Rustam Rakhmetov presented his dissertation “Institutional quality and livestock production in post-Soviet countries: Three essays” on 2 September. Abdusame Tadjiev defended his dissertation on 23 September titled “Exploring the advantages and drivers of sustainable agricultural practices in Central Asia”. On 29 November, Atabek Umirbekov presented his work “Local and Global Determinants of Hydroclimatic Variability in Central Asia” in public. The final presentation was given by Lanjiao Wen, who successfully defended her dissertation “The transition to bioeconomy and its implications for sustainable development: The case of Germany” on 9 December. We congratulate everyone on their outstanding achievements! +++ Vladislav Valentinov has received multiple awards for his scientific work: His article “Sustainability and stakeholder theory: a processual perspective” (2023) received the Kybernetes Literati Award 2024 for “Outstanding Paper”. The article “Toward a digital transformation of the theory of the firm: Emergence as framework for organizational sustainability”, co-authored with Kristof van Assche and Frans Hermans, was awarded the Best Paper Award in 2023 by the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences. In addition, Vladislav Valentinov is among the “World's Top 2% Scientists” for 2023 according to Stanford University. +++ Jerry Sun was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Land Use Science. Since 2022, Dr. Sun has also been an editor and member of the editorial board of Environmental Modelling & Software. +++ IAMO researcher Samuel Brea Martinez-Collado recently completed a research trip to the United States. He presented on contested market perceptions at the 2024 Markets & Society Conference and the annual meeting of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Society and collaborated with scholars from Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. +++ Finally, we would like to welcome new staff members at IAMO: Oysuluv Norboeva (doctoral researcher) as well as Xuchao Che and Yilin Cui (visiting doctoral researchers) in the Agricultural Policy department, and Tong Wang and Mengke Zhu (visiting doctoral researchers) in the Structural Change department. +++
