Long Night of the Sciences Halle 2019

05 July 2019 - The Long Night of Science is one of the highlights of the summer in Halle (Saale). In this context, IAMO invites you to an exciting evening with topics from the fields of agriculture and nutrition. In addition to several lectures and an information desk, young and old guests can enjoy a goose parade, a tasting booth with insects, and drone flights on the IAMO grounds.

Program at IAMO

5:00 - 9:00 pm
Let the geese are marching in

In ancient times geese were kept as guards, weed killers and lawn mowers. Today the farm animals are used as suppliers of meat, feathers and down. Here you can guard the birds together with the goose maid, feed and pet them.

5:00 - 9:00 pm
Grab your quill

Martin Luther and Harry Potter have shown it already – goose feathers are excellent for writing. Try it out for yourself at our craft booth. You can also handcraft original animal figures from the feathers.

5:00 - 11:00 pm
Crawling animals on the plate

Proteins are essential components of a healthy diet and are found in both animal and plant-based foods. But how much protein is actually found in fish, soybeans and insects? Find out at the quiz and trial stand.

5:00 - 11:00 pm
Drones in agriculture

With the help of unmanned aerial vehicles, conclusions can be drawn about soil quality, plant growth and climate balance. Silvio Kelz lets the drones fly and discuss how they work and what they can do.

6:00 - 6:30 pm
Genetic Engineering in the Public Spotlight

For years, public attitudes to genetic engineering in food production have diverged widely. Scientist Gabi Waldhof investigates the background to this heated debate between factual knowledge and moral concepts. (in German only)

7:00 - 7:30 pm
Meat-Fish-Fly - What Do We Eat Tomorrow?

Our body absorbs vital proteins with our food daily. Vera Tekken from the Leibniz Research Association “Food and Nutrition” explains how this nutrient is related to production, the environment and health. (in German only)

8:00 - 8:30 pm
Return Migration and Social Change in Kosovo

Kosovo is a country of emigration, yet every year many people return to their homeland. Janine Läpple examines which new ideas and values they bring with them, especially with regard to gender equality. (in German only)

9:00 - 9:30 pm
Digital Technologies to Reduce Climate Risks

Sensor technology, drone deployment and mobile apps support risk management decisions of farmers. Lena Kuhn talks about the development of suitable tools in order to protect against increased drought risk and reports on field studies in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. (in German only)

5:00 - 11:00 pm
Insights into science

Why can't we come to an agreement in the genetic engineering debate? What opportunities does digitisation offer in the agricultural sector? How can the integration of returnees in Kosovo be successful? These and other research topics will be presented.

5:00 – 11:00 pm
25 Years of IAMO - Faces of Diversity

With impressive portraits and statements by IAMO staff, the institute presents exemplary the diverse institute culture. Let yourself be photographed and discuss the subject of diversity.
