GEO-WB6

Establishing a Geoinformation Centre for the Western Balkans at the Agricultural University Tirana

Research domain:
Reduction of and adaptation to environmental risks
Project duration:
01.03.2024 - 31.12.2025
Investigated countries:
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Republic of Kosovo, Serbia

Geoinformation makes a valuable contribution to the assessment of environmental conditions and thus facilitates well-founded decisions on land use, sustainable resource management and nature conservation. In the Western Balkans, there is still much room for progress in the use of geoinformation technologies, with a particular lack of appropriately trained personnel and training opportunities. In GEO-WB6, IAMO, together with the Agricultural University of Tirana, is setting up a Geoinformation Center for the Western Balkans to close precisely this gap. With a comprehensive course program, we will on the one hand improve the education and scientific exchange of university staff. On the other hand, we will collect geodata from the region relating to agriculture and land use and make it available through an online data portal. The aim of this project is to improve human resources for the management and analysis of geodata and to strengthen the regional network of geoinformation experts, as well as to establish a central institution for geodata and its analysis in the Western Balkans in the long term.
