Kick-off workshop for the PhD program has started

As part of the cooperation project “Structured Doctoral Programme on Sustainable Agricultural Development in Central Asia” (SUSADICA), a kick-off workshop will be held from 26 to 27 March 2019 at IAMO in Halle (Saale), Germany. The event is being jointly organised by IAMO, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME). It is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and two Uzbek ministries.

The workshop was launched by SUSADICA project leader Martin Petrick, Professor of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy at JLU, the Prorector for International Cooperation at TIIAME, Abdulhakim Salokhitdinov, and the SUSADICA project coordinator at TIIAME, Shavkat Hasanov. Afterwards, all participants of the doctoral program were given an opportunity to present their research projects and discuss them with other doctoral students and their supervisors.

One day before, JLU Vice-President Peter Kämpfer and Martin Petrick already welcomed the delegation from Uzbekistan to JLU in Giessen. With TIIAME, JLU concluded a Memorandum of Understanding on the Research Training Group last year.

The SUSADICA project strengthens graduate education in the field of agricultural development in Central Asia and supports an understanding of the impact of agricultural resource use on economic, social and environmental sustainability. Ten doctoral students who are funded by the project will spend half of each project year in Germany at three partner institutions (JLU, IAMO and the University of Halle) and the other half at TIIAME. "We hope this will strengthen the academic life at our partner institution in Central Asia and enhance the academic community locally with international scientific standards," said Petrick. The aims of graduate programs include the ability to independently conduct research and the integration into a network of international partners and events. There is a focus on research topics that link the international academic debate with agricultural development challenges in Central Asia. Their research focuses on the transformation of farms and labour relations, agricultural innovation and technology, agricultural policy, changes in the natural environment and agriculture, and water governance. The research focuses on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
