Data and facts
Foundation
The Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) was founded as a foundation under public law and at the recommendation of the German Scientific Council in November 1994. IAMO is a member of the "Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz" (WGL) scientific community, and is not part of any university. It is supported by the Federal Government and Federal States.
The research centre at Halle (Saale)
Halle was chosen for two reasons. Firstly, to build on long-established links between the newly-formed German States and the countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Secondly, because Halle offers the opportunity of close cooperation in the areas of research and teaching with the Faculty of Agriculture of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). Examples of this cooperation are teaching appointments for IAMO's Heads of Department at the faculty.
Financing
Within the scope of the institution's support, the Federal Government, in the form of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMVEL) and the Federal States (here represented by the state of Saxony-Anhalt) provide financing for IAMO in equal shares. In 2005, 2.83 million Euro were spent on the institute's administrative and academic work.
Staff
At the end of 2007, 80 people were employed at IAMO. IAMO hosts between 25 and 50 visiting academics per year.
