All successful treasure hunters await a surprise.

En route in rural China
IAMO researchers report on their field work in pictures and words

How do people live in rural China? Which professions have they learned and what are they doing for a living? What happens when the Chinese government decides to implement agri-environmental programmes and reforests cropland? Is it difficult for members of ethnic minorities to find a job? These and many other questions are dealt with by researchers of IAMO’s China International Research Group. To answer them the agricultural economists and geographers have been travelling China for several times since 2008. In rural Chinese provinces they for example interviewed farmers or spoke to representatives of the municipalities. Today Bente Castro Campos and Jens Frayer will tell you about their research in China and show pictures of their journey.

9.30pm
Every seventh person
Film by Elke Groen & Ina Ivanceaneau
Austria/Luxembourg 2006 | 74 min | 35mm | Colour | Dolby stereo | Chinese and Naxi (with German subtitles)

Every seventh person in the world is a Chinese farmer. Between 2002 and 2005 the filmmakers Elke Groen and Ina Ivanceaneau carried out numerous interviews in three Chinese villages documenting everyday life – without any censorship whatsoever. At the same time the inhabitants of the villages shot their own short films about their surroundings, their hopes and their dreams – short films that have become part of "Every Seventh Person". The result is an exceptional documentary film that provides insight into life in China away from the urban and industrial centres – a life between socialism and market economy in which the villages become the testing grounds for democracy and self-determination.

"Every Seventh Person" was made in cooperation with the EU research project
"Success" and Oikodrom – The Vienna Institute for Urban Sustainability and was supported by European Commission / research project SUCCESS, Austrian Film Institute, ORF (Film and television agreement), Film Fund Luxembourg

We like to thank Landesfilmdienst Sachsen-Anhalt for its kind support.

Please note that all IAMO events during the Long Night of Science will be in German.
